Basic Guide to Using Media Magnet

Media Magnet is intended to simplify the process for getting your lectures (and other recurring content) online. You can be up and running with Media Magnet in just a few minutes.

If this is your first time using Media Magnet, we recommend you visit the My Account page and pick a password for uploading files. You can change your password at any time, and unlike Media Mill, the password never expires.

Creating a Course

Media Magnet is organized around the concept of a "Course," which defines a grouping for Media. The "New Course" page allows you to enter information about your course, including the course identifier, descriptive information, along with preferences about how to handle course media.

As you fill in the Department, Course Number and Section Number fields, you'll notice the text at the top of the page updates. By naming your files with this text at the beginning, Media Magnet can automatically process your media.

There are three derivative creation checkboxes at the bottom of the "New Course" page. These define what happens to newly uploaded media. Checking these boxes will also automatically create a podcast feed for each.

You can also upload a "logo" for the course. This will be an image included in your podcast feed and displayed on iTunes U. Please use a JPEG image, approximately 300x300 pixels.

Once you've filled out the "new course" form, click submit. You're now ready to start adding content.

Adding Course Content

You can upload content with the uploader tool, or via a solution like Camtasia Relay. As long as you name the files with the [DEPARTMENT][COURSENUMBER]_[SECTION_NUMBER] syntax, your media will be automatically processed.

If you don't name your media appropriately, it will appear in a red box at the top of the "My Courses" page, and you'll be able to assign it to a course.

Accessing Content

As you add new content, it will automatically be added to the appropriate podcast feed. For a full explanation of where to find the podcast feeds and additional content, visit the visual guide.
